An exposure to Dorothy Sayers' monumental radio plays on the life of Christ helped change my mind. Before too long, I was writing skits and short plays for our family's church in Eaton Ford, England, where we lived and worshiped for almost a dozen years.
In 1990, back in the United States after a dozen years overseas, I became the Christian Drama Director of the Wesley Grove Disciples in Hanover, Maryland. This started a period of script-writing which has produced 18 separate plays, 10 of which are now in print.
Allen says:
I don't write the scripts; Liz does. But I have always been the "tech" side of the production (sound and lights). It might seem terribly complicated, but it isn't. I want to encourage other small churches to start this sort of challenging and fulfilling ministry.
Bread of Life Books
Why do we call ourselves "Bread of Life Books"? Because John chapter 6 reveals that every human being needs Jesus -- His words and His sacrifice. In other words, He is our spiritual bread, and we need Him daily. Our society constantly "feeds" on visual entertainment; why not encourage them to feed on Jesus through drama?
Are dramatic portrayals of Christ somehow improper or sinful?
The answer is: NO! Jesus was the Son of God at the same time He was the physical Son of Man. Was God "offended" in any way by this? Of course not! He planned Jesus' appearance on earth deliberately to gain our attention and to redeem us from our sin nature! Everything that Jesus said and taught reflected the loving, compassionate, and dramatic nature of the Creator-God Who longs to father His own creation. We believe that drama can portray the vitality of Jesus' life and ministry, inform audiences about Bible truths, and then draw people into a living relationship with Him.
